#microblogmondays – nothing is free

My province has approved government funded IVF for one single embryo transfer to any woman suffering from infertility of any kind.
Pretty awesome right? And it’s basically free (well we pay for it in our taxes each year). I am sooo lucky to live somewhere that has this option – and for free!
Except nothing is ever free. So Hubby and I meet the criteria, and applied for the program. We were accepted – which is super exciting – and we found out recently where we sit on the wait list.
Our IVF tentative date is 2021.
That’s five years. I mean – I know how lucky I and I will wait the five years but 2021? Holy shit. I’ll be 34. What about someone who’s that age now? They’d be denied because the program caps at 38.
It’s just so frustrating. I am so thankful to have this option available to us – but five years is so far away!
I guess it’s just a reminder than nothing is ever free. It doesn’t cost money but it costs time…and time isn’t something we all have.

Wow, that’s frustrating. I didn’t realize there was such a huge wait list, but I suppose why wouldn’t there be. Alberta is talking about doing this and while it’s too late for me I have hope for future IFers.

I didn’t expect there to be such a wait list either but they can only do so many each year…I checked 3 centres within 6 hours of me and they were all similar. My advice to anyone thinking of it is to do it ASAP- because 5 years is a long time when you have a deadline!

I’m not sure but my guess is the budget only allows for so many – and they can’t spend money they haven’t budgeted for.

I’ve been following the news from here, and it is bittersweet. You’re right — time is just as meaningful as money. I hope the wait feels quick; 5 years is so long.

5 years is so long!! It’s a great step forward and I am so happy to have this available to me – but 5 years is a long time. And I feel for those in their 30s already who won’t get the IVF in time for the program expiry – so tough!
